Tom Webb grew up in Albemarle, North Carolina, and settled in Charlotte in the 1970s. As a real estate developer, he played a particularly significant role in the YMCA's suburban expansion. He described his work with enthusiasm, going into considerable detail about efforts that included the 1980s renovation of the Dowd Y, the development of the suburban Brace branch, and the founding of the Stratford Richardson branch. Mr. Webb talked at length about his admiration for Harry Brace, who headed the Y from 1983 until his unexpected death in 1999. Specifically focusing on the impact Mr. Brace's leadership had on the Y in terms of promoting equity and of making all people feel welcome at events and YMCA facilities.
