Description

Charlotte native Stan Law is one of the most active and successful African American leaders in the Charlotte YMCA. He became involved with the Y when his parents sent him to a YMCA summer camp, and he got his first job there soon after college. He served as executive director of the McCrorey Y and then the Dowd Y, and he spearheaded the development of the Stratford Richardson Y. He left Charlotte to head the YMCA in Birmingham, Alabama and then the YMCA of Northwest North Carolina. He was named CEO of the Charlotte YMCA in the fall of 2021, some months after this interview was conducted. His discussion offered a telling window into the efforts of the Charlotte Y to address some of the social and programmatic inequalities that became increasingly obvious in the city during the 1990s. He also discussed the significance of his deep family connections to Y work, both in the community and at Johnson C. Smith, where his grandfather was president.
