Keith Gaston Bernard discusses in-depth his experiences working on the first board of the Lesbian and Gay Community Center Project in Charlotte, North Carolina when it came into being in the early 2000s. Topics discussed include the early days of the Community Center Project; the management of finances and a physical space; key members of the board and volunteers who were involved in the project and their contributions; and Bernard's involvement in other LGBTQ+ groups in Charlotte including First Tuesday, a politically forward nonpartisan advocacy group for LGBTQ+ citizens of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County, and One Voice Chorus.

Biographical/Historical Note

Keith Bernard was a 66-year-old man at the time of interview, which took place in Charlotte, North Carolina. He was born in Rock Hill, South Carolina in 1956. He received a BA in History at Winthrop University and studied accounting and business at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where he also wrote for the student newspaper under the pseudonym Hephaestion. He was employed as a certified public accountant and business manager in the Charlotte area with various companies including Time Warner Cable Media Sales and Bahakel Communications. He also worked abroad as an International Teacher in Beijing China, and as a Finance Trainer in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
