UNC Charlotte senior and computer science major John Tan recounts his campus experiences on April 30, 2019. Mr. Tan describes how the volume of communication through which he learned about the active shooter on campus alarmed him to the seriousness of the situation. He relates his coping mechanisms in the days following April 30, specifically playing and talking with other video gamers across the country through the gaming application Discord. Mr. Tan describes his involvement with the student held candlelight vigil on May 1, 2019, and discusses the resilience of the UNC Charlotte student body in the weeks and months that followed April 30.
