Description

Elizabeth S. Newitt shares her memories of working with a number of healthcare organizations in Charlotte, North Carolina, including Charlotte Memorial Hospital, the Cancer Society, and the Tuberculosis Board, as well as her work with other community organizations including the Community Chest and the Charlotte Woman's Club. She describes in detail her efforts to try and raise the funds to build Memorial Hospital, and how when fundraising fell short, doctors agreed to donate money in exchange for control over the hospital board. Ms. Newitt expresses her disappointment that the Memorial Hospital board did not include representation from laypersons. She also describes more broadly the role that middle and upper class women of her time would take in charity work, and talks about other prominent Charlotte women who worked in both paid and unpaid capacities in hospitals, including Emma Hall and Josephine Kerr. She concludes by expressing her belief in the value of preventative medicine.
