Description

In this first of three interviews, former columnist and food editor Eudora Garrison discusses her career in the newspaper business at the Charlotte News and the Charlotte Observer. Ms. Garrison describes first working as a secretary to the publisher for the Charlotte News, which later merged with the Observer, then beginning work as a food editor in the 1950s. Writing for what was then the "women’s section" of the paper, she discusses the feel and content of features in that section meant to appeal to Southern women, and their cross-over appeal to men. Ms. Garrison reflects on the changes she’s witnessed over time in the editorial policies and coverage at the Observer, describing the newspaper's transition from a small hometown paper to a more sophisticated, hard-hitting publication that reflects the growing diversity of Charlotte's readership. Ms. Garrison addresses the role of women at the Observer on both the reporting and business sides of the operation and reflects upon her own experiences as a wife, mother, and newspaperwoman.
