Description

Maria del Carmen Juarez Juarez, known as "Carmen," discusses her experiences in the United States after emigrating from Irapuato, Mexico around 1987. Ms. Juarez talks about her perspective on differences between Latin American and American cultures, and challenges that she has faced through living in a country with a different culture and language from her native Mexico. She shares her experiences in trying to raise her children to have an understanding of and appreciation for Mexican culture, and says that it is difficult to get them interested in learning Spanish. Other topics include Ms. Juarez's observations on a growing awareness in the United States of Hispanic culture during the years she has spent living in the United States and indigenous peoples and cultural festivals in Mexico.
