Description
A native of Nicaragua, Hernaldo "Raymond" Murillo discusses his experiences as an immigrant during the last seven years in Charlotte, North Carolina. Mr. Murillo talks about the pushes and pulls driving his migration to the region, including work prospects and family. He reflects upon the difficulties he and other Latin Americans face in the United States, like the language barrier and cultural differences. Mr. Murillo discusses customs and traditions he carried over from Nicaragua and those that he has found as nearly identical in the U.S. While he heralds the opportunities for work within the U.S., he talks about the possibility of return migration to Nicaragua. While he says a growing Latino population in the Charlotte region might make future immigrants' transitions more smooth, Mr. Murillo also cites the negative impact that September 11, 2001 has had on immigration.
