Description
Charles McCullough discusses his experiences playing high school and college sports, and his career as athletics coach at West Charlotte High School beginning in the 1960s. He attended West Charlotte High School as well as coaching there as an adult, and shares stories about his high school coach, Jack Martin, attending North Carolina College (now North Carolina Central University), and excelling in track. As a basketball coach, Mr. McCullough talks about leading multiple teams to win the state championships and other outstanding teams his team played against, including South Mecklenburg High School and Myers Park. He explains the process of racial integration in the early 1970s at West Charlotte, and how he lost his whole team at first, but he believed that integration ultimately improved the basketball program by making it more competitive. Mr. McCullough talks about girl's basketball in the region and at West Charlotte, and how he has seen interest in participating in girl's basketball ebb and flow over time.
