Description

Elizabeth Stratford Newitt recounts her experiences playing basketball at Alexander Graham High School in Charlotte, North Carolina during the early 1920s. She discusses playing on the girls' high school basketball team and her role as the team’s manager. As manager, it was Mrs. Newitt's responsibility to organize the games between her team and other teams in the region, as well as to manage the team's funding and travel arrangements. She also discusses her belief that sports play an important role in building character in young people. She thought sports were especially important for girls because they teach girls to be assertive.
