Description

Former player, coach, and educator Bill Bost discusses his personal experiences around the game of basketball. Living and coaching in Catawba County, North Carolina, Mr. Bost explains the pivotal role basketball serves in a small town, where players and spectators alike turn to it as one of the few forms of entertainment. He talks about the long tradition of basketball excellence in Catawba County and for that credits winning teams, continuity of competent coaches, and the creation of a sense of excitement. A coach of many accomplished girls' teams, Mr. Bost challenges the gender conventions surrounding young women and athletics. Despite the stereotypes, he argues that girl basketball players possess tremendous stamina, are accurate shooters, and are more attentive to coaching than boys. Mr. Bost talks about the influence of television sports on young athletes, especially young men, who imitate the playing styles of professional athletes. Likewise, he shares his coaching philosophy and outlines the importance of fun, athletic conditioning, and discipline. He also discusses basketball's meaning in the life-education of players and student athletes' roles as leaders in school settings.
