Ellen Little discusses her experience of attending a Billy Graham crusade in Charlotte, North Carolina in 1972 and the impact it had on her spiritual development. A teenager at the time of the revival, Ms. Little describes the points of Dr. Graham's message that resonated with her and shaped her personal beliefs, most importantly the notion of acceptance in religion for all people, regardless or race or gender. She also talks about the positive impression that the organization of the crusade, itself, and the ministry's subsequent contacts made upon her. Ms. Little credits Dr. Graham for his message of racial equality and that women had a strong role to play in the church. She discusses the divergence of her spiritual beliefs with what she calls more "judgmental" and "male-dominated" Christian ideology which she feels is pervasive in evangelicalism. Ms. Little also addresses the issue of race--both in terms of Graham's stance on race relations, and contemporary events at the time of the 1972 crusade occurring in Charlotte regarding public school integration.
