Janie Mayfield "Mae" Cook describes her life in Concord, North Carolina during the early 1900s and her experiences during the Great Depression. Ms. Cook shares that her family owned a farm and regularly attended church. Ms. Cook then explains how the Great Depression impacted her family, which started in 1929 when she was in her mid 20s. She talks about having very little money and not knowing where her next meal would come from. She mentions that her husband had to get two jobs outside of the farm through the Works Progress Administration. Ms. Cook also shares several personal anecdotes about the politics, challenges, and financial support for her family during the Great Depression.
