Description
Town planner and landscape designer Earle S. Draper recounts his work on the Myers Park development during the early twentieth century in Charlotte, North Carolina. Initially hired to plan the neighborhood and facilitate development, Mr. Draper tells the history of Myers Park, including the process it took to acquire the property; describes the role of George Stephens and the Stephens Company in developing the neighborhood and explains J.B. Duke's interest in the project. He also discusses how much the people who did the work got paid. Mr. Draper established his own company in 1917, where he continued to work on the Myers Park project as well as other development projects in Charlotte. He also discusses what Charlotte was like in the early twentieth century, including the different businesses and the trolley from uptown to Elizabeth Avenue. Mr. Draper also details how roads were different back then; more narrow, and most had sidewalks. He finishes by talking about his opinions about developing high-rise apartments near Myers Park and zoning.
