Description

Dr. Eugene Lewis Daniel discusses his experiences in Stalag Luft III, a German prisoner of war camp, during World War II. He was a chaplain in the U.S. Air Force and on February 16th, 1943, he was captured by the Nazis and taken to Stalag 13 in Sagan, Germany (now Poland). In the camp, the men were malnourished, and most people slept on the floor. Dr. Daniel recounts escape attempts, including the Great Escape which later inspired the movie and the tunnels under the camp. Dr. Daniel was allowed to preach in the camp, and sometimes the German guards would join, but he had to have his sermons approved. He also explains the importance of international aid organizations including the International YMCA, International Red Cross, and the Ecumenical Commission for Chaplains in Service, which provided the men with food, books, equipment, waivers, and wine. On April 29th, 1945, the Russians came and freed the prisoners. Dr. Daniel concludes by talking about churches and religion in Nazi Germany
