Esther Young recalls her childhood in rural Cabarrus County, North Carolina during the early 1930s and summarizes her family's experiences during the Great Depression. Ms. Young explains that her family farmed throughout the Great Depression and while they did not experience a total financial loss, they did feel the repercussions of the national emergency. Ms. Young also shares what education was like during the early 20th century and addresses school segregation. Other topics that Ms. Young recounts during the interview include joining the Women's Army Corps during World War II, learning about the news through movie newsreels, sharecropping and living in a community with little diversity.
