Description

Cynthia Woods is a former resident of Washington Heights in Charlotte, North Carolina, whose son continues to live in the family house. Mrs. Woods’ parents moved to Washington Heights in 1948 and eventually moved into their originally three-bedroom home, where Mrs. Woods was born. She discusses the strong community and family ties of the neighborhood that existed when she grew up, as well as fond childhood memories, such as getting hotdogs and ice cream on the way home from school. She talks about local businesses, some of which no longer exist, including two movie theaters, grocery stores, and the Excelsior Club. Ms. Woods also mentions attending Biddleville Elementary School, Northwest Junior High School (now Northwest School of the Arts), West Charlotte High School, and North Carolina Central University, where she met her husband, Alvin Woods. She discusses her father's garden and how he gave produce to neighbors. She mentions how her son attended Northwest School of the Arts and West Charlotte High School at a time of "school choice," before the informal resegregation of Charlotte-Mecklenburg education. Mrs. Woods ends the interview by reflecting on the ways that the neighborhood has changed and discusses her vision for Washington Heights as returning to a close-knit family community.
