Description

Jacqueline Nelson describes the Druid Hills community in Charlotte North Carolina, (formerly known as Edison Heights,) during the 1950s. Ms. Nelson's family moved into their home in 1952 and she fondly remembers her childhood and the close-knit nature of the community. Ms. Nelson also speaks about the role segregation played in her education and how that influenced her career as an educator by giving her insight into the needs of the children she served.

Biographical/Historical Note
Jacqueline Nelson was a 78-year-old woman at the time of interview, which took place in her home in Druid Hills, Charlotte, North Carolina. She was born in Catawba, South Carolina in 1937. She was educated at West Charlotte High School, Morgan State University, and George Washington University, where she earned her doctorate in education. She was employed as a science teacher in Hawaii, Shelby, North Carolina, Cumberland County, Virginia, and Washington, D.C.
