Biographical/Historical Note
Paul E. Hemphill was a 70-year-old man at the time of the interview, which took place virtually over Zoom in Charlotte, North Carolina. He was born in Charlotte in 1949. During his time as a student, he helped found the Black Student Union and was the first president of the organization after it was officially recognized by the student government. He was educated at University of North Carolina at Charlotte and North Carolina Central University School of Law. He was employed as an attorney at law and has since retired.
