John L. Shadd briefly shares his thoughts on race relations within the United States during the 1930s-1970s. He comments on Jim Crow laws; the impact of the Civil Rights Movement on the livelihoods of all Americans, but African Americans in particular; and encounters with racism through his work as a railway mail clerk with the U.S. Postal Service.

John L. Shadd was a 82-year-old man at the time of interview, which took place in Charlotte, North Carolina. He was born in Charlotte in 1924. He studied for three years at Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, North Carolina and was employed with the U.S. Postal Service for forty years.
