Description

Audio begins with the end of Harvey Gantt's campaign speech in Manteo. Beginning around 2:25, Gantt delivers a campaign speech at East Carolina University (ECU). He is introduced by a student, Peter, who talks positively about Gantt's support of education, job training, Social Security and Medicare, and equal pay. Gantt tells the audience that he is depending on students, focusing on the issues they care about, and the election is about the future. Topics include quality of day care, young children having opportunities, quality of education, cost of tuition, job security, welfare programs, crime, Social Security and Medicare. Gantt says he wants to be a reformer, and that the Federal government should be involved in early education (Head Start), fund school lunches, computers in schools, funding Upward Bound. He says that his opponent, Jesse Helms, voted against all these programs. He encourages students to participate in the election. Concludes with a question and answer session, with topics including gay marriage and gay rights, tobacco, and building coalitions.
