1969 Alabama 500

The images in this collection are from the 1969 Alabama 500, the inaugural event at the Alabama International Motor Speedway (now known as Talladega Superspeedway). This race was the 44th event of the 1969 season. This race is remembered because of a driver boycott led by Richard Petty due to tire failures during practice sessions. Because of the tire failures, Firestone withdrew its tires from the event. To help encourage fans to attend the race, Bill France, Sr. offered attendees free tickets to the 1970 Daytona 500 if they bought tickets to the Alabama 500. This race also introduced the Dodge Charger Daytona into the premier series. Bobby Isaac started from the pole with a speed of 196.386 mph. Richard Brickhouse scored his first and only premier series win. Jim Vandiver, Ramo Stott, Isaac and Dick Brooks finished in the top-five. The time of race was 03 hours, 15 minutes, 07 seconds. The average speed was 153.778 mph. There were seven cautions for 38 laps.
