Sherrill Coutourier was a 57-year-old woman at the time of interview, which took place at Allenbrook Elementary School in Charlotte, North Carolina. She was born in Charlotte in 1948. She graduated from North Carolina Central University with a BA and from UNC Charlotte with a Master’s in Education, and was employed as an elementary school teacher.

Sherrill Coutourier discusses her experiences as a teacher in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools' open schools program from the 1970s to the 1990s. Topics discussed includes the benefits of open education for both students and teachers, parental involvement in the school and the curriculum, the rise of standardized testing, and the challenges the open school programs faced within the Charlotte-Mecklenburg school system.
