Otis Skipper recounts his experiences playing basketball in Charlotte, North Carolina from the 1930s-1950s. He describes starting to play at the age of twelve at the YMCA, and discusses how the athletic director, Carl Link, was instrumental in organizing basketball teams and recruiting and coaching players. Mr. Skipper recounts playing for junior and senior high school teams as well as the Charlotte Observer team in the industrial leagues as an adult. He discusses how Charlotteans were highly involved in regional basketball and that even former mayor John Belk played in the city league. Other topics discussed include changes in basketball rules, life during the Great Depression, memorable players in Charlotte-area basketball, and playing in one of the first interracial games in Charlotte.
