Abstract
-
C.D. Spangler, President of the University of North Carolina System from 1986-1997 and CEO of Spangler Industries Incorporated, discusses his tenure as the President of the UNC System. He begins with an overview of how the UNC System and the Board of Governors evolved from the Consolidated University of North Carolina which was created in 1931. He then describes the mechanism of funding in the UNC System. Mr. Spangler continues with a discussion of the tenure of Chancellor James H. Woodward at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and talks about his legacy--most notably the growth of UNC Charlotte in size and scope. Mr. Spangler considers Dr. Woodward to be "an outstanding chancellor." He concludes the interview reflecting on his charge to the 16 campuses of the UNC System in March 1990 to review their respective mission statements, making changes where warranted. It was this initiative that allowed UNC Charlotte to add doctoral work to their mission statement, which was the first step towards becoming a research institution.
