Of particular interest is an overseer's contract (1862) of Margaret Allison Torance that outlines daily routines for field hands. Notebooks of James G. Torrance list enslaved persons (1836, 1839, 1840, 1844-47). A postwar contract (6/14/1867) binds the services of a woman, likely a formerly enslaved person, to Margaret Allison Torrance. Also includes a letter (1799) to Hugh Torance by his brother Albert, detailing Albert's trouble with an enslaved man named Abraham.

Papers of Hugh Torrance (1743-1816) and his descendants, including his son, James Galbraith Torrance (1784-1847), and his grandson Richard Allison Torrance (1833-1927), concerning their extensive mercantile, planting, and milling operations at Cedar Grove plantation in northern Mecklenburg County, N.C. Includes account books, Revolutionary War service records, family correspondence, land and estate records, information on enslaved persons, contracts with overseers, two acrostics by George Moses Horton (an enslaved African American poet), and poems and notes by area schoolmaster Peter Stuart Ney. Digitized content only includes a small number of documents relating to enslaved persons, letters from Richard Allison Torrance, and the George Moses Horton acrostics.
