Harvey Gantt officially announces his candidacy in Charlotte for U.S. Senate in 1996 and is introduced by two speakers. Gantt is introduced as a man of vision and described as a progressive leader in Charlotte. Gantt says that he wants to restore people's faith in their leaders. He wants to look people in the eye and if they don't agree, ask, "How can we make it better?" He says that he was very optimistic six years ago in his 1990 campaign and appealed to voter's best hopes and aspirations. He says it was exhilarating, frustrating and worthwhile, and that his 1990 campaign made sense at the time and the issues are the same in 1996.
