Description
-
Recording includes two interviews, labeled UNC Greensboro but possibly unrelated. In the first interview Gantt is interviewed by unknown speakers, possibly on a call-in radio program. The recording only includes Gantt's responses to the questions, and seems edited. Recording begins with Gantt talking about important issues in the 1996 campaign, such as education and health care. Gantt is addressing what has changed and what has remained the same since the 1990 senatorial campaign. Other topics include race and the election, polls, and Gantt's opponent Jesse Helms. Gantt criticizes Helms for refusing to debate Gantt and his campaign strategy. Gantt also talks about the use of the term \family values\ by those who don't support policies that help families, student loans and grants, and a program in Charlotte that teaches kids about voting. In the second recording, Gantt answers questions from the press about Helms's newest attack ad, Medicare, tax breaks for wealthy, balancing the government's budget, and corporate welfare.

Condition Note
-
Jesse Helms speech on cassette trimmed out of the digital file. The first recording sounds edited, and does not include other speakers' voices besides Gantt. The second recording begins and ends abruptly.
