Recording begins in the middle of a campaign speech by Harvey Gantt. Gantt says that voters need to send a message to his opponent, Jesse Helms, and that Helms is working for the powerful and wealthy, not for senior citizens, and he votes for millionaires and against Medicare in the Senate. Gantt says that as senator, he wants to focus on challenges facing working families; invest in education; fund Head Start, student loans, and job training; raise the minimum wage; and fight drug companies on prescription costs. At about 4:12 on the tape, a new recording begins. Harvey Gantt delivers a campaign speech in Goldsboro. Gantt says that perseverance is an American trait. He talks about his background, how his parents didn't have much education but they worked hard and believed in America, they started in public housing but built their own house. Gantt says that Helms is blasting negative ads to scare voters, and he is getting donations from multinational corporations and foreign governments and giving them tax breaks. Gantt says that Helms voted against Medicare and Social Security, and the National Council on Senior Citizens said that Helms is the worst senator for seniors. Gantt gives additional critiques of Helms, and encourages the audience to vote.
