The 1974 Southern 500 race documented in this collection took place at the Darlington Raceway in Darlington, South Carolina, on September 2, 1974. Only twelve vehicles managed to finish the entire race in running condition due to 13 car engine failures, eight recorded crashes, and other mechanical failures. Eleven cautions were handed out for a duration of 101 laps, which is the longest yellow flag period in Darlington Raceway history. Cale Yarborough finished first in this event. Darrell Waltrip, David Sisco, Dave Marcis, James Hylton, G.C. Spencer, Jackie Rogers, Jerry Schild, Joe Frasson, and Pee Wee Wentz were the other top-ten finishers. This event would make Jerry Schild’s only "top-ten" finish.
