The images in this collection are from the 1972 24 Hours of Le Mans race in France, which took place on June 10 and 11. The 1972 race marked the 40th Grand Prix of Endurance. This event marked a new era of a 3-litre limit on engine size. The track also featured a slight change with the construction of a new technical section named Porsche Curves. Because the Manufacturers’ Championship was solidified, Ferrari chose not to participate in the event. Henri Pescarolo and Graham Hill were declared the winners of the event with an 11-lap lead over Matra teammates Francois Cevery and Howden Ganley. Unfortunately, Formula One driver Jo Bonnier died after a collision with a Ferrari GT, which sent the car flying over barriers and into the trees on Sunday morning.
