Headlining acts included the Allman Brothers Band, Foghat, the Marshall Tucker Band, and Black Oak Arkansas. The Eagles were meant to attend, but cancelled. Attended by more than 200,000 people, August Jam was the largest concert ever held in North Carolina and the largest in the U.S. at the time. There was a limited number of tickets sold prior to the concert. However, thousands of fans showed up on the day of the performance and crashed the fence in order to attend.
