The Women’s and Gender Studies 40th Anniversary Oral History Collection documents the origins, development, and legacy of the Women’s and Gender Studies program at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. The program emerged in response to student advocacy during the mid-1970s, when a cohort of women students petitioned for expanded curricular offerings related to gender. Under the leadership of Dr. Ann Cathey Carver, nearly a decade of sustained planning and negotiation resulted in the formal establishment of the Women’s Studies Concentration in 1984, with Dr. Carver appointed as its founding director. The collection spans the period from the program’s inception in 1974 through its 40th anniversary in 2024 and comprises oral history interviews with former directors, faculty, and students. Narrators reflect on the program’s formation, evolution, and broader contributions to scholarship, pedagogy, and campus life. This project was spearheaded by the current director, Dr. Sonya Ramsey, and supported by Carver and Cloninger Fellows Dr. Joy Davis and Staci Batchelor.
