The images in this collection document the 1987 Winston 500, a NASCAR race held at Talladega Superspeedway in Talladega, Alabama, on May 3, 1987. On Lap 22, Bobby Allison went airborne on the front stretch near the start/finish line and ripped almost 100 feet of catchfence. The catchfence deflected Allison’s car and prevented it from flying into the grandstands. The race was cut ten laps short due to impending darkness. Due to the lap 22 incident, this would be the final unrestricted high-speed race at Talladega. Davey Allison won the race. Terry Labonte, Kyle Petty, Dale Earnardt and Bobby Hillin Jr. rounded out the top five. This was Davey Allison’s first career win. The average speed was 154.228 mph. Bill Elliott started from the pole with a speed of 212.809 mph, the record pole speed at Talladega. There were nine cautions for 39 laps. The time of race was 3 hours, 4 minutes and 12 seconds.
